Stick drift – Sounds like a name of some racing game but it isn’t. It is a very common issue that happens to gamepads/controllers, after using them for a certain period of time. It may cause unwanted character movements, can even make the analog stick useless depending on how worse the situation is. It can happen to any controller, doesn’t matter if its a Playstation PS4/PS5 dualshock or a Xbox series S/X controller, it can even be a pc controller. It happens to all the controllers except one about which I will be talking later on below.
So lets know why this happens.
How and why is my controller’s Analog stick drifting to a certain to a direction?
When you start to see that your character is moving without your control, to a particular direction, that means your controller has started showing signs of stick drift. Stick drift happens to almost every controller that exists. The wear and tear and dust particles are the common causes to this issue. If you keep on playing with this issue it will just make the situation worse and decrease the life of that controller faster. If your intriguing mind wanna know how? Then just read the causes again.
So what to do if you are already having a controller with stick drift issue?/ How to fix stick drift?
So first thing you need to do is CLEAN YOUR CONTROLLER. And specially the analog sticks where it moves. Then blow some air with a gas can, If you don’t have a gas can its fine, you can also blow from mouth just remeber no showering should happen.
If that doesn’t work then you need to open your controller, which will definitely void your warranty. So I will ask you right away to skip everything and go to a service centre to get it repaired if it is under warranty. But if it’s not than continue with me.
You need to open the controller and while opening be very gentle. All the wires are very short and if you pull one of them too hard then it may ruin the soldered points. I am not scaring but just warning you before you do such a thing in a hurry. Be gentle and everything will go smoothly and with ease.
So after you have opened the controller you need to remove the cap of the analog sticks and clean it with a little brush and then put some isopropyl alcohol inside the mechanism of the analog sticks. If you don’t have isopropyl alcohol, its fine, just grab a coconut oil or any kind of oil which doesn’t attract any kind of insects, and then put some in the analog stick mechanism. By some I mean one big drop or two small drops to be specific. If you put more it will come out and spill all over the PCB and it will be a mess. And obviously we don’t want that to happen so keep one drop in mind before pouring it. After pouring move the analog sticks in a circular motion clockwise and then anticlockwise. If you are having trouble to understand how to do it then you can watch on my youtube channel for a video reference, there I have clearly shown this process. You can check in Youtube https://youtu.be/JCVmAk-Z3Rg link – to get redirected to my video.
After this you should be done with your stick drift issue, if not then there is some shells built on the sides of the analog housing, you need to open that and wash the coil and then oil it up and then fit it back again. This is a very tough thing to do and people often break their analog sticks while doing it so I won’t recomend it doing it on your own, if you’re not an expert.
And one last and the most extreme step is to solder out the existing analog stick and put a new one. All though it can only happen if you already have one half dead controller lying around. And these are all the ways how you get rid of stick drift.
And what I was talking about in the beginning that there are some controllers who don’t face such issues – Yes these controllers exist. These controllers have special analog sticks which dont have the traditional mechanism, instead they come with hall sensors. Hall sensors are magnetic sensors, which determine the movement throught magnetic fields, and so far as per my research there is no such cases reported that a hall sensor is having stick drift issue.
Hall sensor controllers comes with a hefty pricetag but there are some cheaper options as well like the CB Stellaris and so on.
Summary
Stick drift is a common issue in game controllers where the analog stick moves without input, causing unwanted character movements. It affects most controllers, including those for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC, and is typically caused by wear and tear and dust particles. To fix stick drift, you should first clean the controller, especially around the analog sticks, using a gas can or by blowing air. If that doesn’t work, you may need to open the controller, voiding the warranty, and clean the inside with isopropyl alcohol or oil.
If cleaning doesn’t solve the problem, you may need to perform more advanced repairs, such as washing the coil inside the analog housing or soldering in a new analog stick, though these steps are risky and challenging. However, controllers with hall sensor analog sticks, which use magnetic fields instead of traditional mechanisms, do not experience stick drift. Examples of such controllers include the CB Stellaris.
