Those of you who saw our last #PokdeLIVE episode would know that ASUS TUF Gaming FX505D is pretty easily upgraded. Our video probably wasn’t the easiest way to explain how to upgrade your laptop, so we disassembled the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505D again and took a few photos to show you how to replace the parts in the affordable gaming laptop.

Removing the bottom cover

To make sure you get the bottom cover off correctly, I recommend placing the screws near the holes they fit into and using this photo as a reference. There are 11 screws in total, five of which are shorter than the other six. One challenge you might face is disengaging all the clips – I would try to pull upwards from the rear corners as there should be a lip between the bottom panel and hinge mechanism. Be gentle with this process as it’s made of plastic. If you have successfully removed all clips, carefully slide your finger in between the gap to take off ASUS TUF Gaming FX505D’s bottom cover.

In the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505D, what can you upgrade?

Once all is off, you can take a breather and marvel at the stunning contrast between the bare copper heatpipes and the blue PCB in the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505D. We probably saw nice temperatures when we reviewed the laptop because it has a similar number of heatpipes to ASUS’ higher end models.

Are there any upgrades you can make?
1. Memory (RAM)

Unlike some ASUS gaming laptops, the RAM on this model are all upgradeable. Although ASUS has provided DDR4 2666MHz, bear in mind that they will only run at 2400MHz due to certain AMD Ryzen processor limitations. For this reason, you won’t benefit from buying more expensive faster RAM – it will still only run at 2400MHz. You can reach the maximum memory support with 32GB DDR4 2400 RAM (16GB x 2) should you need extra memory for Chrome.

2. The 2.5-inch drives

The 2.5′′ drive caddy is secured with two screws. ASUS provided us with three screws in the box, so you could secure the drive in the caddy yourself. Of course, with a 2.5′′ bay, you can either go for fast SATA SSDs, or go for more storage, but slower HDDs. We have our Phidisk WrathKeeper here which we can slot into the 2.5′′ bay. ASUS left this 2.5′′ bay empty, so you won’t need to migrate or backup anything. Just throw in a new drive, and you are done.

3. The M.2 SSDs

The ASUS TUF Gaming FX505D comes with a 512GB Intel 660p M.2 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe SSD pre-installed. This is great because it supports PCIe Gen3 x4, meaning you can upgrade with any of the high performance M.2 PCIe SSDs such as the Samsung 970 EVO or budget-friendly Phidisk WrathKeeper M.2 PCIe Gen3 x2 NVMe and Kingston A1000 M.2 PCIe Gen3 x2 NVMe SSDs. Just note that it only accepts the common 2280 form factor, not 2260 or 22110 sizes. We’re still in the dark about whether or not it will work with M.2 SATA drives, but these types of drives are becoming less popular nowadays so it’s unlikely to be an issue.

4. Is it cooling?

Over the AMD CPU and NVIDIA GPU there are four screws each. Two screws hold down the left fan and two more for the right fan.

Overall, we are pleased with the temperatures reached on the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505D. If you ever need to replace the thermal paste, it won’t be difficult. You will find that this laptop is one of the easier ones to service when compared to laptops with cooling systems under their keyboards. Moreover, thanks to ASUS’ anti-dust system, you can repaste for better performance or clean out any dust from the heatsinks without difficulty. Bear in mind though that there are wires running over the left heatsink which need to be detached before taking off the cooling assembly. All in all, kudos to ASUS for making sure that maintenance of the FX505D is straightforward and effortless.

ASUS used copper quite liberally here. Most of their previous designs had aluminum heatspreaders over the VRAM and VRM, but this time around they went full copper for better heat dissipation.

5. Upgraded to the latest version

In the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505D, what upgrades are available?

We don’t have a SO-DIMM RAM stick, so we didn’t fully kit out the ASUS TUF Gaming FX505D. However, it does now come with 1920GB SSD storage, rather than the original 512GB. It’s upgradeable, so there’s no need to jump through hoops to upgrade RAM, storage, or even the cooling system.
