GoPro Hero 9 Black released on 2020 is already superior than its predecessor. It is more compact than GoPro Hero 8 and equipped with newest features, although it is bit bigger & heavier than the former. It can be easily mounted on surfaces just like the rest. So what’s make it special? Well the front facing display for the very 1st time in the GoPro family which makes it perfect for vloggers.
The lens cover of GoPro Hero 9 Black is removable unlike Hero 8 so you can use manual lens/ND filters of your preference. There is a mount button and power button on the camera. It have water-sealed compartment for battery and microSD. The battery of GoPro Hero 9 Black is larger that means more powerful and no previous GoPro family batteries can be used here. Good thing remains that GoPro Hero 9 Black is been shipped with reusable hard-shell case. It has built-in mount compatible with 40+ mounts & accessories that means compatible with most previous GoPro’s mount and accessories.
GoPro Hero 9 Black Performance
If you’ve already used previous models then the using experience will be similar with GoPro Hero 9 Black. You can easily switch between video mode, photo mode, time-lapse, slow-mo by right left-swipe on viewfinder. You can set voice commands by a down-swipe gesture, also can be done from settings. You can view the media on GoPro by swipe-up gesture from bottom of screen. The touch sensation has been improved with this new version. However, this is not entirely certain as many are complaining to have a sluggish experience with the touch which makes it difficult to use while mounted. It has wider screen which makes the visual experience better for the user.
GoPro Hero 9 Black Picture Quality
GoPro Hero 9 Black have 23.6 megapixel sensor which is a big update from previous GoPro ‘s having 12 megapixel. That means more enhanced photos can be captured. Claimed to have 14.7 megapixel more in each frame. Under proper light conditions the pictures look decent, atleast perfect for Instagram uploads.
GoPro Hero 9 Black has a narrow f/2.8 aperture and also has an option to shoot HDR photos. It has Night Photo mode that also take pretty decent photos at dark, if not best. It also provides with burst and live burst modes to capture a frame from short videos. Basically giving you reason for it’s high price and updated version.
The main latest feature is that it can capture 5K (5120*2880 pixels) which is obviously the highest possible video quality provided in a action camera. Its Hypersmooth 3.0 stabilization works better than before. Using Linear+Horizon leveling you always get videos of proper perspective with built-in horizontal level. Videography on low light, well it’s not poor and I think that’s expected as low light means lot of noise and jittering in videos. This is something where GoPro needs to work hard. In terms of vlogging, the inbuilt mic works great and the voice captured while vlogging has been coming to be satisfying to the customers. Even so, to get far better audio quality, it’s a good option to add an external mic.
GoPro Hero 9 Black Battery
GoPro Hero 9 Black has 1720 mAh battery and more battery means more longevity (approx 30% better battery than GoPro Hero 8 Black ). It lasts generally 15 to 20 minutes longer than its predecessor. The battery longevity depends on lot of factors like more battery usage in timelapse mode ON (and other shooting modes), if the GPS, Wi-Fi is ON. But I must say the battery longevity is better than Hero 8.
The price range of GoPro Hero 9 Black in India is Rs 38,900 (in Amazon) and one downside of GoPro is that they bring little upgrades with each new version. It took 9 models to finally give a front display screen when its tough competitor, Dji Osmos action camera did it on their first model and at a comparatively lower price. GoPro still needs improvement in their low light photo/video capturing mechanism and touch response mechanism. Anyway, if you want to buy a powerful GoPro action camera, this is the best of it’s family; obviously if you are okay with the price.
